Home - Merits of keeping pet chickens as a hobby
So, How am I Doing? Interested in Learning More about Raising Chickens as Pets?
Since you're still reading this, maybe you’ve become a little intrigued with the idea of getting your
own pet chicken(s). Over the past few years, several articles have appeared about the popularity of keeping chickens as pets. You can read
a couple of them here. Maybe they'll influence your
decision.
I hope so, there’s nothing more fulfilling to me than spreading the news about my favorite
hobby. I’ve done it for a long time and have been pretty successful, but this will be a test
of whether I can express my enthusiasm and passion in writing.
If I have piqued your interest, you’re welcome to browse the pages that follow where I’ll try to
shorten the learning curve for you as you get started raising your pet chickens. And, if you're already an experienced chicken person
you'll still find resources and items of interest.
And if you haven't quite decided whether raising chickens is right for you . . . please read
below before you make a firm decision!
Now You Can Help Save a Heritage Breed of Chicken From Extinction! How great would that make you
feel?
Yes, more than thirty breeds of chickens, almost HALF of the historic breeds are on the endangered species list! Maybe more,
by now.
Just imagine how you'll feel being part of the important mission of increasing the numbers of these beautiful and majestic birds.
Your help is needed now!
Pam Percy, author of The Field Guide to
Chickens (see below) credits The American Livestock Breeds Conservancy (ALBC) with being instrumental early on in
creating awareness of this problem. The Society for the Preservation of Poultry Antiquities (SPPA) is a key participant as well. They
publish a breeders directory so that people like you can start with high quality stock.
Ms. Percy's book profiles each of the breeds and identifies the level of danger each specific breed is in according to whether
its' situation is deemed to be CRITICAL, RARE, on WATCH, requiring STUDY, or RECOVERING. The photographs are stunning, and if you're
leaning toward playing an important role in saving these birds you won't find it easy to decide which breed you want to
raise. They're all unbelievably beautiful.
Okay, it's still up to you to decide whether raising chickens as pets, while maybe even saving a specific breed, will work
with your lifestyle, family, and location.
Whatever you decide, I appreciate your being on here.
Thanks again,
